It was originally to guard against an English attack with the aim of destroying Lorient that the fort of Penthièvre was built in 1747 by the duke of the same name, admiral of France and governor of Brittany. If the fort at Penthièvre is now used as a training and commando initiation center, some parts are open to the visit, especially the tunnel in the rock, a place of memory, where the bodies of these 59 Morbihan martyrs. A monument erected in 1948 in memory of their sacrifice is commemorated each year on 13 July. Registered in the inventory of historic monuments and now owned by the army, it shelters the 3rd Marine Infantry Regiment.
