Quiberon, an heritage to be discovered

The identity of Quiberon, strongly marked by its history since the Neolithic is discovered both on the coast and inside the peninsula, between moors and villages. You may discover this heritage at your own pace!

Le Vivier and its megaliths

At the southwestern tip of Quiberon, the current restaurant "Le Vivier" at the edge of the cliff was the cottage of a fishpond of crustaceans guardian located below. It is down to the wall that closes a natural crevice between the rocks that we discover the importance of this pond that has contained up to 20000 crustaceans.

Two menhirs with recognizable silhouettes stand right beside the Vivier: the menhir says in a bishop's cap and the broken menhir, whose upper part lies at the base.

In the direction of Port Maria, at the Pointe de Kerguérit, at the edge of the Côte Sauvage road, a covered path of 7.50m opens at ground level, next to a small menhir.

It has the particularity of having dry stone walls instead of upright slabs that are usually found in this type of burial. Offerings were found there: flint blades, arrowheads and pottery debris.

Turpault Castle

Situated on the tip of Beg er Lann, this castle marks the entrance to the Wild Coast. Modeled on the English medieval style, it was built in 1904 by a spinner from Cholet, Georges Turpault who christened it the castle of the sea. Then the Quiberonnais renamed Château Turpault Still being a private property, this castle can not be visited not.

 Port Maria

The first sardine port in France in the 1950s, Port Maria had 13 canneries compared to 2 at present. Port Maria still hosts some 200 fishing boats thanks to the creation of a municipal auction in 1977. It is the second in Brittany after Lorient and is now computerized. Port Maria is also the starting point for the islands of Belle-Ile, Houat and Hoedic. The end of its large pier offers a wide view on the wide beach.

The Grande Plage and its villas of the last century

In the middle of the 19th century, the Grande Plage of Quiberon was lined with dunes and with a few scattered houses. The arrival of the railroad in 1882 will facilitate access to the peninsula and Quiberon becomes the favourite holiday resort Lyonnais silk manufacturer who built the first large villas. Quiberon is besides ranked seaside resort since 1924 and this big beach is today in the middle of the station.
