The museum of Chouannerie in Quiberon

Situated at the entrance of the peninsula of Quiberon, at the southern exit of the town of Plouharnel towards Quiberon, 4 km from Carnac, 13 km from Quiberon, the museum is set up in a German infirmary blockhouse built in 1941.

Founded in 1985 and symbolically opened on July 14 by Guy Halna Fretay, the only museum in France dedicated to the Chouan movement , Vendée and Western Wars offers visitors more than 400 pieces (maps, documents, weapons, costumes, various objects, original engravings by Marcel de Villemoisson, etc.).

The museum recounts all the events of the Western Wars from 1793 to 1832, from showcases and explanatory paintings. Some prestigious pieces attract the attention of visitors, especially the letters advocating the extermination of Chouans. These very moving collections help to better understand what really happened at that time.

Would you believe, it is precisely on the line of republican defense during the so-called battle of Quiberon (July 1795) which opposed the troops of Chouans and emigrants of Hervilly to the republican armies of General Hoche. From this museum, one can see also the hill of Sainte-Barbe where posted General Hoche, climbed in the steeple of the chapel to dominate the battle.

The Chouan movement Museum in Plouharnel has become a must-see destination for all history buffs. Ideally located at the entrance of the peninsula of Quiberon, between wild moors and strikes beaten by the swell, this bastion of our memory has offered a new image on the internet.

It is now possible to consult a clear and didactic presentation on the Web to better know all the information necessary for the discovery of this Museum: history, schedules and rates, virtual visit, online store, etc.

There are also two texts available for download or available as eBooks to skim directly on the screen. Thanks to this beautiful communication tool, the Museum of Chouannerie should become one of the high places of historical tourism in Brittany.
